Homecooked Southern Soul. Served with Love.

Welcome to The Tangerine Skillet, a cozy corner of the internet where southern comfort meets everyday homecooking. This blog was born from my belief that food is more than just a meal—it’s a memory, a tradition, and a way to bring people together.

Here, you’ll find recipes inspired by my Florida upbringing, my southern roots, and the flavors I’ve discovered through my travels. From cast iron classics like skillet cornbread and slow-simmered collard greens to Sunday desserts that taste like home, every dish is made to be approachable, flavorful, and full of soul.

Why “The Tangerine Skillet”? Because it blends the bright, fresh flavor of new inspiration with the timeless, seasoned charm of southern cooking. It’s a nod to my roots, my creativity, and my love for food that tells a story.

Whether you’re a seasoned home chef or just learning your way around the kitchen, this is your space to find inspiration, tips, and recipes that make you feel confident cooking for yourself and the people you love.

Pull up a chair, grab your favorite skillet, and let’s make something unforgettable—together.

Meet the Creator

Welcome to The Tangerine Skillet! My name is Veronika Handy. I was born and raised in South Florida in a small costal town, where the kitchen was the heart of the home and food was one of the ways we showed love. Through my momma, grand momma and aunt’s, recipes and cooking traditions were shared and even created.

I’m a proud military veteran, a wife, and mama to three amazing boys. My family and I reside in Western Kansas thanks to military life, but no matter where I go, I carry my Southern roots with me in every dish I make.

I received a degree in culinary from Johnson & Wales University in 2004, at the Norfolk, Virginia campus which has since has closed. In addition to my degree in culinary, I have a B.A. in Construction Management from the college of Engineering at Rowan University, located in Glassboro, New Jersey in 2020.

My family and I carry and hold our Christian values close and sacred to our hearts. I’m also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and sisterhood, scholarship, service, and excellence into everything I do—including my cooking.

I went to culinary school because I’ve always had a deep love for food, and now I get to share that love with you. From skillet cornbread and smothered pork chops to Sunday peach cobbler, I believe food should feed the soul just as much as the body.

Thank you for being here. Let’s get cookin’!
